Ortho and Spine Surgeon Compensation Map

Purpose of a Compensation Map

Physicians and surgeons should be able to see compensation and asset ownership data when trying to find a job.

~50% of ortho surgeons leave their first job within 5 years.

Why?

  • financial reasons (34%)
  • practice not as advertised (31%)
  • minimal training in selecting a job (53%)
  • most ortho grads feel inadequately prepared for the business side of orthopedics (88%)

Reference

Dr. Asghar mentions that MGMA as one of the main sources for compensation data, but he says, “It’s important to try to aggregate that data yourself”.

When you have the data, you will be better able to evaluate your compensation package and whether or not it is competitive.

Reference

We have seen hospitals give surgeons “cookie-cutter’ contracts knowing that the surgeon will take it or leave it because they know family or other factors will pull them into their system.

Empowering Surgeons with Data

Our goal is to provide surgeons with information that is readily available to them with a significant cost barrier. (the MGMA data is available for ~$400 per year, as depicted below.)

Reference

Through collecting survey data from practice orthopedic and spine surgeons we are building a map of compensation and asset ownership data in each state within the USA.

Data will be broken down by state into averages for subspecialties, along with a friendliness index that intends to rate how friendly states are towards surgeons.

Reference

Right now, our goal is to release the aggregated study results to surgeons who complete the full survey (data is anonymous). Check out the survey here: Survey Link

Defining Each State’s Friendliness Index

As more data is collected the “Friendliness Index” will become more representative of surgeon’s true opinion towards the state in which they work.

Again, our goal is to help improve the information that job-seeking surgeons have access to. What data would you like to see? Which state do you think is the most friendly to surgeon practices?
